The Gambia, one of the smallest countries in Africa, is located on the west coast of Africa, with a total land area of approximately 11,300 sq. km. The Gambia borders Senegal on the north, south, and east; and its western coasts lie on the north Atlantic Ocean. The River Gambia flows through The Gambia from east to west into the Atlantic Ocean, and is a revered feature of the country's geography and landscape. The Gambian people are historically known for their friendliness and hospitality. The official language of The Gambia is English. The main tribes, each of which also speak their own language, are the Mandinka, Wolof, Fula, and Jola. The climate is tropical, with virtually no rainfall between November and June. The heaviest rainfall is in August and September. The country has wonderful beaches, fishing, over 200 species of birds, and wildlife, such as monkeys, lizards, hippos, crocodiles and baboons. Most important, however, are the country's traditions, daily life, and people. It is our mission, as a non-profit organization, to present to the world the talent of The Gambia's young people, and to offer unique in-depth photo journalism features--the first of their kind in Africa--on every aspect of African life, with photographs and writing by Gambians themselves. The country has an outstanding journalistic tradition, and we honor and support The Gambia's journalists and newspapers. We also want to assist in finding ways to encourage successful small and large businesses, to bring responsible tourism to The Gambia, and to support lifelong educational opportunities for all. We highly commend the Gambian Tourism Authority for its oustanding new web site, which you will want to visit, at www.visitthegambia.gm. THE
