Abie Kujabie and the Gambia Armed Forces women team won the women’s beach volleyball gold medal in the past two Gambia national championship but the sport crowned a new champion on Sunday after close rivals in Interior’s Fatoumatta Ceesay and Mariama Ginadou beat them in straight sets to win gold.
Kujabie and her partner Nyima Demba may have looked unbeatable when they eliminated Gamtel/Gamcel in the semifinals but Ceesay and Ginadou left little doubt on Sunday who the best team was at the championship.
The Police girls earned a hard-fought 24-22 victory in the first set and then dictated the tempo for the remainder of the match in a relatively straightforward 23-21 second set.
While it wasn’t the gold she earned in 2014 and 2017, Abie Kujabie of GAF became the most decorated athlete in the history of national beach volleyball with two gold and one silver to her name.
