Papa Gassama set for AFCON outing

Gambia and Africa’s best Bakary Papa Gassama has been named on the list of referees for next month’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

The 40-year-old is among 27 central referees that have been lined up for Africa’s top competition set to kick off on June 21 in Egypt.

Dibba’s brace guide Shenxin to second win

Scorpions attacker Pa Amat Dibba scored twice to hand Shanghai Shenxin their second victory of the campaign with a 4-1 win at Guizhou Zhicheng in the Chinese second-tier.

The 31-year-old, who scored in Shenxin’s 4-2 defeat against Guangdong Southern Tigers last weekend, put the visitors ahead in the 68th minute before ensuring they leave Guizhou with the maximum points with his second goal ten minutes later.

Barry nets first league goal

Gambia midfielder Hamza Barry was in joyous mood at the weekend as he scored his first goal of the campaign in Hajduk Split’s 4-0 walloping of HNK Rijeka in the Croatian top-flight.

The 24-year-old, who recovered from a knee injury early this year, returned to Hajduk’s starting line-up before repaying the coach’s faith in him by doubling the home side’s lead before two second half goals ensured they dent second-placed Rijeka’s title hopes.

10th Edition: SJAG honour Gambia’s sports stars

For ten years running, the Gambia National Sports Awards Night organised by the Sports Journalists’ Association of The Gambia (SJAG) has been ‘the sports actors’ party’.

Hundreds of people from within and outside the tiny West African nation gathered at one of the country’s hotels, Coco Ocean, to witness and celebrate the sports heroes and heroines for their incredible performance in 2018.
