The Belgian top-flight match between Standard Liège and Scorpions defender Bubacarr Sanneh’s Anderlecht was abandoned on Friday with just half an hour played after the visiting fans threw flares and smoke bombs onto the pitch.
The home side were leading 2-0 at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne in Liège when the referee abandoned the match after 32 minutes with the players already been forced from the field twice before.
The Gambia international was left on the bench despite Senegal defender Kara Mbodji’s sending off after two booking offences.
Anderlecht will face a fine of €50,000 over the suspension of the match. That fine still needs to be ratified by the Pro League’s board. They are also likely to forfeit the game 5-0.
It would be the first time since 1963 that Anderlecht have lost four consecutive league games.
Anderlecht are currently fifth in the play-offs table and in danger of missing out on a European qualification for next season.
