Senegalese High Commissioner to The Gambia, His Excellency Salif Njie, has lauded the cordial friendship between the Sports Journalists’ Association of The Gambia (SJAG) and the Association Nationale de la Presse Sportive du Sénégal (ANPS).

A high-powered delegation, comprising the Senegalese Sports Minister Matarr Ba, Senegalese national team coach Aliou Cisse, ex-international Henry Camara and Senegalese sports journalists are due in Banjul on Friday on the invitation of SJAG for the 10th National Sports Award slated for Saturday, 20th April, at the Coco Ocean Hotel.

The event is meant to celebrate, honor and award past and present sports personalities, for their achievements in their different disciplines.

A delegation from SJAG met the High Commissioner at his office in Pipeline on Friday to brief him on the upcoming national event. The delegation comprised of honorary life president and veteran sports journalist, Pape Saine; SJAG President Musa Sise, 1st VP Uthman Jeng and Secretary General Alieu Ceesay.

High Commissioner Salif Njie expressed delight at the visit by the SJAG delegation saying its friendship with ANPS is something that can greatly benefit both countries.

Sports, he said, is a uniting tool that can have a positive impact on the development of any nation. “The Gambia and Senegal can partner in many areas to develop sports. We can even have the two countries collaborate to host the African Cup of Nations.”

Musa Sise, President of the Sports Journalists’ Association of The Gambia said the event is meant to celebrate the achievements of the sportsmen and women.

On the SJAG-ANPS partnership, he informed High Commissioner Njie that the two associations have over the years enjoyed a cordial friendship.

“We share our [sports press associations’] common challenges and the way forward for sports in our countries. We have also been each other’s events.”

SJAG Honorary Life President Pape Saine, who led the delegation, commended High Commissioner Njie for accepting to receive the delegation, while applauding him for the many positive changes in the Gambia-Senegal relations over the years.

He called for the support of the Senegalese High Commission to the event and by extension to the development of Gambian sports.
