Papa Gassama to officiate Cameroon V Comoros AFCON clash

Celebrated African referee Bakary Papa Gassama will officiate defending champions Cameroon’s final 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group B qualifying match against Comoros this weekend.

The 40-year-old, who took charge of the AFCON qualifying fixture between South Africa and Nigeria in November, will be assisted by compatriots Abdul Aziz Bollel Jawo and Omar Darboe with Maudo Jallow serving as the fourth official.

The Indomitable Lions, second in Group B, need a draw on Saturday to qualify for this year’s finals in Egypt, after they were stripped of hosting rights.

Cameroon currently has 8 points and only needs a point in the their match against the Islanders at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaounde to be assured of a slot.

Gassama, Africa’s top referee, took charge of Raja Casablanca’s final CAF Confederation Cup Group A match against AS Otôho d’Oyo last Sunday.

He also officiated Al Hilal’s game against Al Faisaly in the Saudi Pro League at the start of the month, dashing out two yellows and a red card in the process.
