Alassana Jatta nets on Paide debut

Gambian striker Alassana Jatta opened his professional career with a goal on his debut as Paide Linnameeskond beat defending Estonian champions Nõmme Kalju FC 2-0 on the opening day of the Meistriliiga on Saturday.

The 20-year-old, on loan from Gambian side Real de Banjul, struck a ferocious left-footed shot past Kalju keeper Pavel Londak to hand the visitors the lead in the 38th minute before a second goal in the 56th minute ensured they shocked the Estonian giants on the opening day.

The Gambian striker’s goal was the first scored by any player this season in the 2019 Meistriliiga, a feat that attracted praise from manager Vjatšeslav Zahovaiko.

“If you want to get involved in a big game, you need an attacker who will help the team out of trouble and have a solid score. We have been missing this guy in Paide. [Alassana] Jatta is a young player, for the first time in a foreign environment and culture, sees snow for the first time and feels down,” Zahovaiko said of the Gambian, who won the Man of the Match award.

“It takes time to adapt [to European football] but the physical abilities [of Alassana] are very impressive. Jatta is fast, durable and robust, although the latter can be further developed,” he remarked.

Jatta, who joined Paide in November after a successful trial spell, was subbed after 80 minutes while compatriot and teammate, Muhammed Sanneh, featured the entire match.

The 19-year-old defender, also on loan from Real de Banjul, joined the club early February after a successful trial.

The Gambian duo will hope to continue their fine form when Paide welcome FC Flora on their home debut on Sunday.
