Sanneh crowned Danish champion with Midtjylland

Gambia defender Bubacarr Sanneh has won the 2017/18 Danish league title in his first season with FC Midtjylland after their 1-0 win over erstwhile club AC Horsens on Monday.

The 23-year-old Scorpions international guided the club to their second title in its history, their first being in 2015.

With Midtjylland needing a win to seal the title, teammate Marc Dal Hende bundled home a goal-bound header to fire the team to glory.

Shortly after the final whistle, a helicopter containing the trophy landed in the centre circle and Buba and his elated team mates were crowned champions.

There was anguish for Copenhagen-based club Brøndby IF, who could only manage a 1-1 draw with Aalborg having needed victory to have any chance of winning the league.

Brøndby’s late slump in form cost them a first league title since 2005. After a scintillating season, they lost to Midtjylland on May 14 with the only goal scored by the former Real de Banjul captain and then drew 2-2 with Horsens in the previous round of games.

"It's a great achievement for me and my team to win the league after a tough season. We showed character and finally it paid off, only God knows how I feel after being a champion in Denmark," Sanneh, who won his first professional league title since turning professional in 2014, exclusively told Gambia Sports.

He added: "We dreamed together as a team and I am happy we achieved our goals. It’s been an incredible season and glad we capped it off by being Champions of the Danish League. We now have to focus on the big task ahead of qualifying to the Champions League."

Sanneh, who joined Midtjylland from AC Horsens in November, came close to joining Brøndby before rejecting them to join the Herning-based club.

He has made 12 appearances for the club since January, scoring thrice and clocking 911 minutes in the process.

Midtjylland now enter the UEFA Champions League in the second qualifying round after finishing with 85 points from 36 games, four ahead of Brøndby.
