Six sport personalities have been nominated for the maiden Sports Personality of The Year at the 2018 Wah Sa Halat Music Awards on 6 January.

The awards, which takes place at the Kairaba Beach Hotel on Saturday, sees three footballers, a referee, a boxer and a gym trainer shortlisted for the maiden category at the events.

Reading FC winger Modou Barrow, the only Gambian to have played and scored in the English Premier League; Yanbian Funde‘s Bubacarr ‘Steve’ Trawally, the only African player to make the move straight from the continent to China and Red Scorpions’ record female league leading goal scorer, Adama Tamba, are the three footballers who made it to the list.

Africa’s best Referee and the only Gambian to officiate at the FIFA World Cup, Bakary Papa Gassama, WBC World Super Middleweight and WBA World Light Heavyweight boxing champion Badou Jack and Wally Fitness make up the nominations for the awards.

The Sports Personality of the Year category is one of 19 categories up for the awards and is the 3rd edition of the entertainment awards.

The Wah Sa Halat Music Award is an award event catering to musicians from the Gambia. Its first edition was held in 2016, with rapper Bai Babu emerging big winner with four awards.

The award, which morphed from a radio show of same name, is spearheaded by Yasally Njie-Colley, an on-air personality.
